Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary is home to over 200 bird species. Compared to other Migratory Bird Sanctuaries in the region, the Nature Sanctuary is an eBird hotspot with the second-most-biodiverse site with unrestricted access. Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary has also worked with the District of Saanich to certify the municipality as a Bird Friendly City with Nature Canada. This certification program was created to help address the past few decades of bird population losses all across North America and to connect community to how we can each have agency in supporting bird diversity.

We acknowledge the lək ̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Esquimalt) Peoples on whose territory the Nature Sanctuary stands, and the lək ̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

We respect the vital relationships of First Peoples with these lands and waters for countless generations. We are honoured to receive Indigenous guidance and welcome collaboration in stewardship and appreciation of the Nature Sanctuary.
