Biology Assistant
Swan Lake is hiring four Biology Assistants to join our team this summer and will help with ecological restoration and conservation of the lands and waters.

The Biology Assistants will:
- Support the conservation and restoration efforts at Swan Lake and Christmas Hill
- Actively engage in invasive plant removal in and around freshwater and riparian area (Swan Lake) and Blenkinsop and Swan Creeks
- Actively engage in restoration efforts in a deep-soil Garry Oak Ecosystem
- Support seed conservation and the growth of native plants
- Lead volunteers during restoration events
- Document and record information regarding restoration efforts.
- Collaborate with other team members on restoration and conservation initiatives – such as species and phenology monitoring.
- Help with additional related duties as required
Specifications:
- Four positions available on site in Victoria, BC
- First block anticipated for the following dates: May 11 – July 3 2026 (two positions)
- Second block anticipated for the following dates: July 6 – August 28 2026 (two positions)
- Full time 35 hours/week, $22.00/h, 8-week contract with possibility for extension
- Some schedule flexibility required to support occasional meetings and other events

Nature Educator & Stewardship Interpreter
Swan Lake is hiring two Nature Educator and Stewardship Interpreters to join our team this summer and will help with the development and delivery of nature-themed educational content to visitors at the Sanctuary.

The Nature Educator and Stewardship Interpreters will:
- Develop and deliver programming for the public at the Nature House
- Develop and deliver programming for the public (including participants of all ages) for outdoor spaces at Swan Lake and Christmas Hill
- Develop and deliver educational content for summer day camp groups (school-aged children)
- Assist with content for exhibits at the Nature House to be displayed throughout the year (e.g. exhibits for Summer as well as other seasons).
- Take part in and share information about the restoration and conservation efforts occurring on site.
- Welcome visitors and support general inquiries
- Assist with other administrative and site tasks as needed.
Specifications:
- Two positions available on site in Victoria, BC

Environmental Assistant
Swan Lake is hiring an Environmental Assistant to join our team this summer and will help with ecological restoration and conservation of the lands and waters.

The Environmental Assistant will:
- Regularly take readings of water quality at Swan Lake and other inflows on site.
- Regularly conduct biodiversity surveys including those for plants and animals (e.g. endangered Western painted turtles and other rare and threatened species)
- Conduct other tests (such as soil analyses), and monitoring of other relevant information (e.g. temperature, precipitation, etc.).
- Use mapping software (e.g. GIS) for documentation.
- Analyze data and produce tables and graphs to represent the data.
- Write reports summarizing the data for both a scientific audience and public/general science communication.
- Communicate with visitors and the public about the initiatives taking place on site.
- Contribute to public relations/communications/social media posts regarding biodiversity monitoring happening at Swan Lake and Christmas Hill.
- Collaborate with other team members on restoration and conservation initiatives.
- Additional related duties as required.

Communications Assistant
Swan Lake is hiring a Communications Assistant to join our team this summer. The Communications Assistant will support the Community Coordinator and other team members at the Sanctuary to promote various programs and initiatives of the society, as well as engage our membership and the broader community to take part in activities at Swan Lake and Christmas Hill.

The individual hired in this position will:
- Support work to document and share stories about the conservation and restoration work being conducted at both Swan Lake and Christmas Hill.
- Develop publicity materials for print and electronic communications for members, visitors, the general public, and other partners.
- Collaborate with colleagues to produce supporting materials for our public events including Native Plant Sale, Annual General Meeting, volunteer appreciation events, etc.
- Contribute to monthly newsletter, social media postings, and other communication projects.
- Collaboration with the Community Coordinator and Communications Assistant on other marketing initiatives as needed.
- Undertake additional related duties as required.
Specifications:
- One (1) position available on site in Victoria, BC

Volunteer Board of Directors

The Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary Society seeks to expand its Board of Directors.
The Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary is a charitable, non−profit environmental conservation and education organization in Saanich. We are seeking to expand our Governance Board with strategic, and collaborative community members to support and promote the Society’s mission and programs.
Guided by an updated policy manual and governance practices, this volunteer Board supports the Society’s mission to conserve and restore Nature Sanctuary lands and waters, while inspiring community stewardship engagement and enhancing collaboration with First Peoples of this region.
We are particularly looking for expertise in:
- Board Leadership in Executive roles
- Donor Relations & Fund Development.
The following skills and experience will also be an asset:
- Board Governance & Compliance
- Membership & Community Engagement
- Information Technology
- Risk Management
As a member of the Governance Board, the Director’s key responsibilities are to:
- Provide effective strategic guidance and oversight;
- Determine and promote the Nature Sanctuary’s vision, mission, and values;
- Ensure the Society’s compliance with legal, financial, and contractual obligations;
- Commit to a two-year term requiring approximately 8 - 12 hours monthly for Board responsibilities (6 Board meetings/year, committee work and AGM/special meeting attendance)
- Support community and fund-raising events
Ideal Board members bring the ability to navigate complex issues with a balanced and adaptable approach and have skill (or a willingness for training) in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel) and M365 Teams. You enjoy working as part of a team and are motivated to help with projects that bring our community closer to our shared mission.
We welcome applicants from a broad range of backgrounds, perspectives and experience. Applicants are required to reside in the Capital Regional District (CRD) and to complete a Criminal Record Check (free for volunteers).
All Board members are elected to a two-year term, with the option of renewal.
Governance Board member responsibilities:
- Promote the Nature Sanctuary’s vision, mission, and values;
- Ensure compliance with legal, financial, ethical and contractual obligations;
- Support and evaluate the Executive Director’s work performance;
- Provide effective strategic planning, monitoring and general oversight;
- Commit to the Society’s Code of Ethics;
- Commit to a minimum of 8-12 hours monthly to board responsibilities (includes 6 Board meetings/year, committee work and AGM/special meeting attendance); a leadership role requires a higher level of commitment beyond Board meetings; and
- Support community and fundraising events by being present for 1-2h up to 3x per year (e.g. the annual Native Plant Sale, community open houses).
- Fluency in or a willingness to learn Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel) and M365/Teams.
Training Provided:
New board members are provided with an orientation to their role and responsibilities as a Society volunteer and board director, as well as the mission and work of the organization. Incoming directors are provided with the Board Policy Manual and will have the opportunity to review and discuss it with a Governance Committee member.
