Swan Lake Nature Ambassadors (SNAP) provide important visitor experience and monitoring support on the Sanctuary grounds. SNAP volunteers allow us to stay connected to what is happening on the trails, lands, and waters. They pick up litter, note species observations, and most importantly, regularly chat with visitors – alerting them to the stories of wildlife on site, as well as the cultural expectations, and appropriate behaviours. We see this role growing in importance
as the area densifies and more people move to the area.

In 2024, 18 people were directly enrolled as SNAP volunteers and 93,000 have benefited from the outcomes of the program. This program brings a great sense of peace to those who are enrolled in it, as well as helping bring back important information to our limited capacity staff team. Community members are very grateful for this volunteer role with many neighbours regularly thanking SNAP volunteers for their efforts.

We acknowledge the lək ̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Esquimalt) Peoples on whose territory the Nature Sanctuary stands, and the lək ̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

We respect the vital relationships of First Peoples with these lands and waters for countless generations. We are honoured to receive Indigenous guidance and welcome collaboration in stewardship and appreciation of the Nature Sanctuary.
