Interpretive and Wayfinding Project Vision

With the Boardwalk project complete, the Society is working toward its next big project celebrating the Sanctuary’s 45th anniversary in 2020.

The sign system consists of wayfinding, interpretation and regulatory categories. Adherence to our brand guidelines ensures a consistent “Sanctuary style” across different signage types. Interpretive signs should be interactive and engaging for different age groups.

How everything fits together: Core themes are broken down into elements which are presented through messaging and activities. All components must work together to achieve learning goals and outcomes.

The Interpretive and Wayfinding Signage Project suggests a ‘Slow Tech’ approach to exhibits and most interactive elements. While there is a place for creative use of electronic media, we want to focus on giving people something on site that they cannot create on their computers. Interacting with actual objects—whether real artifacts or reproductions—creates a more unique experience that rewards the visitor for leaving their house. Electronic media will play a supporting role and consist of cost-effective and easily maintained electronic components such as audio and iPads to supplement exhibits and meet the needs of visitors with special needs. We will also suggest ways to integrate media such as web sites and social media for pre-trip planning and post-trip enrichment.

Please consider a donation to help the Society finds its way to this important project; be part of the Wayfinding and Interpretive Campaign. Your gift today can provide new signage for the Sanctuary to nurture nature for future generations to come.
