Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary hosts a wide variety of programs for diverse audiences: programs for families, special events, and parent and child programs.

 

Special Events – Throughout the year we celebrate exciting happenings in the world of nature. Drop-in anytime to our scheduled special events. Admission by donation.

 


A-gnawing Mammals – drop in event
Sunday, January 27, 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.
Mice, squirrels and voles oh my. Find out about these gnawing mammals and many more in the rodent family. This event features bones, pelts, games and discovery into the wonderful adaptations and habitats of this diverse, and sometimes pesky, group of mammals.

Delightful Ducks – drop in event
Sunday, February 24, 12 noon to 3 pm
Some dabble on the surface, some dive for their food – we’ll explore the amazing adaptations ducks have for living on the lake and discover who’s who in the duck world.

Fossil Fair

Saturday & Sunday, March 23 & 24, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Who lived here millions of years ago? Dinosaurs, trilobites, ammonites, enormous clams and sharks lived in the ancient tropical coral seas and palm tree forests that covered Vancouver Island. Paleontologists will share their personal fossil discoveries including many from this past year. Bring your family and your own fossils for identification. Kids can follow a scavenger hunt, or make fossil and dinosaur rubbings.
Drop in, from 10:00 to 3:00.

Spring Break at Swan Lake

March 25 to 28, 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. drop-in anytime. Admission by donation
Games, crafts, songs, and hands-on activities; fun for the whole family! Live animals will be featured during the Snake Spectacular event. Swan Lake Trails Discovery and Christmas Hill Wildflower Walk both feature outdoor guided walks on uneven terrain; be sure to wear sturdy shoes, bring a water bottle and snack if desired.

Wednesday, March 27: Snake Spectacular
Thursday, March 28: Christmas Hill Wildflower Walk
 
All events are drop in 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. and will include family friendly crafts & activities, except the Wildflower Walk which is exclusively a hike up Christmas Hill (leaving the Nature House at 12:15 pm).
 
Throughout Spring Break….

8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday
Feed the ducks, hold a snake, make a puzzle, buzz with the bees, hike a trail....




Wild about Wildflowers – drop in event
Sunday, April 28, 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.
Spring has sprung and the gardens at Swan Lake are in full bloom. We celebrate the wonderful world of wildflowers with guided tours of our native plant garden, crafts for the kids, and hands-on information about planting native wildflowers.

Bee Day
Sunday, May 26, 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.
A honey of a program fit for the royalty of the insect world. What’s the buzz about bees…How can we encourage bees in our backyards? Bee songs, bee crafts and some bee spit to taste. Join us and you’ll bee amazed, bee enchanted and bee happy. Bee there or bee square.
Admission by donation, $5 per person recommended.

Terrific Turtles
Sunday June 30, 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.
Turtle nesting season is upon us. Find out about these scaly wonders with games, crafts, and visits with our biggest celebrity, the live Western Painted Turtle, Wrinkles!
